November 12, 2020
Dear AES Families,
I am writing to you on behalf of the Alexander School Committee. At the School Committee meeting on November 10, 2020 held via ZOOM, it was discussed and voted on that Alexander Elementary School will extend remote learning to November 30th, 2020. The School Committee will reconvene prior to that date to reassess the need to either continue remote learning beyond November 30th, or to adopt one of the models of in-person learning.
The School Committee remains committed to returning to in-person learning as soon as possible while also considering local health and safety indicators. With the continual rise in cases of COVID-19 in the area - the health of the students, the staff, and their families is of the highest priority.

Dear AES Families,
With the recent announcement by the Governor that Washington County’s new ‘yellow’ categorization suggesting an elevated risk of COVID-19 spread, and the recent increase of transmission in the area, as a precaution starting on Wednesday November 4th, 2020 Alexander Elementary will be moving to remote learning for all students until Monday November 23rd, 2020. At that time, the School Committee will reassess the decision on whether to return to in-person learning.
Students will attend school on Monday, November 2nd, 2020 for their normal 8am - 1:30pm school day to receive their devices, learning materials and more detailed instructions from their teachers. Tuesday will be a Teacher Workshop Day and Wednesday will begin the first day of remote learning. We ask families who are interested in signing up for meals during remote learning to contact AES Food Service at (207) 454-2623 Ex.# 3 before Wednesday, November 4th.
Please continue to monitor your emails and the school website to stay up-to-date with the latest information from the school. Information regarding remote learning and more is available on our school website at: alexanderelementary.org

Dear AES Families,
I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to the students, staff, and families for an excellent first week of school. Given the circumstances surrounding a full return to in-person learning at this time, I am proud of how the Alexander school community has responded.
Please be aware that we are currently working on a plan to incorporate outdoor playground and equipment for student use during break times. Updated MDOE (09/04/20) and CDC (08/12/20) guidance suggests that this equipment could be used with proper safety measures in place.
Moving forward, there are sure to be additional guidelines and recommendations from the State that will help further guide schools throughout the year. To ensure you have the latest updates to our plan, please continue to check-in at the school webpage:
As we navigate a very new and different school year together, I would like to encourage everyone to remain vigilant and communicate questions or concerns to the school.
Please be aware that there is an error in the Student Handbook (to be coming home next week with students) regarding meal prices. The following prices are correct:
Breakfast Adult $1.85
Breakfast Student $1.40
Breakfast Free/Reduced $0.00
Lunch Adult $12.60
Lunch Student $2.65
Lunch Free/Reduced $0.00
The SEPTEMBER BREAKFAST/LUNCH calendar has been posted to the website.
Text messages and emails were scheduled to arrive to all families this afternoon regarding AM and PM bus schedules for the Alexander bus.
August 3, 2020
I would like to take this opportunity to provide you information on returning to instruction for Fall 2020. At the time of this letter, it is our intention to return to in-person learning. Note the following important changes to the school calendar:
Circumstances around in-person learning, including recommendations and guidelines from the Maine DOE and CDC can change prior to the start of the school year, affecting our planning and decision making. More details about the schedule changes and how a return to in-person will look are contained within the school’s draft plan, available on our website this week:
Please understand that this plan is a draft document that contains required safety measures and important information from the Maine DOE and CDC framework guiding all schools into a new school year. The plan will be considered for adoption at the August 11th school committee meeting.
Student and staff safety is the highest priority. As we navigate through these difficult times, the safety measures in place will make returning to school this year look different than any other school year. Preparing your family prior to the start of the school year for these changes can help for a smoother transition. The school website will be updated during the month of August with resources to help families prepare for a return to school.
I thank you in advance for your understanding and support as we overcome these challenges together, for the safety and education of our children.

Dear AES Families,
Below you will find a letter from the Superintendent regarding the reopening of schools in AOS 77, which is also being mailed home. Within the letter, the Superintendent highlights required safety measures for all schools in Maine. These safety measures come from the Maine Department of Education’s, “Framework for Returning to Classroom Instruction.”
The full Maine DOE Framework can be found at: https://www.maine.gov/doe/framework
I understand there are many questions about how Alexander Elementary will return to instruction in the fall, and more information will be coming home next week.
