School & Home Compact
What is a school & home compact?
The school and family compact is a voluntary agreement between the school and the parents of the children at that school. A compact outlines how parents, the school staff and students will share responsibility for improved student achievement in meeting the Learning Results. Compacts begin with standards; are a process; define everyone’s responsibilities; and depend on many people believing and using it.
How will we support the compact at Alexander Elementary?
Ownership by all of compact:
- advertise / information
- publish in student handbook
- address compact during open house
- List events on bulletin board
- publish online / Alexander news column
- parent activities / academic fairs
How will we know that our compact is working?
- surveys by parents, students and staff
- meeting during school year to follow up
- informal parent/teacher communications
Teachers and staff will . . .
- Promote reading by reading to and with students every day
- use a variety of teaching strategies to adapt to student’s needs and different learning styles
- make every child feel special and important
- listen and be sensitive to students and parents
- maintain ongoing communication with parents
- inspire students to achieve to their potential
- provide a safe environment conducive to learning
Parents will . . .
- read to and with their children every day
- be active participants in their child’s learning
- communicate with teachers and school staff regularly
- make sure their children are properly clothed, fed and rested so they are ready to learn
- spend time each day listening to and talking with their children
- provide a quiet time and place for their children to study
- be a positive role model
Students will . . .
- read at school and at home every day
- come to school prepared (with books, pencils, homework, etc.)
- ask for help
- come to school with a positive attitude, willing to try their best
- be a good listener
- be respectful and sensitive to others
- have good school attendance
